Spring Workshop
Spring Workshop at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee
TEAM Workshop: Instruction in Devising Theatre
within a Democracy

To create a highly compressed and creative environment, based on the TEAM's process, in which the students will work together to generate their own work.

GOALS AND TASKS:
1) To Generate Discussion about the different approaches to creating work. Topics may include but are not limited to:
SOURCE MATERIALS: How to look around the world and pull from seemingly disconnected sources, and remaining open to synchronicity
WRITING AS A COMPANY: Collaboration and the need to push through, shared vocabulary, writing exercises, and the big question, "Why a company?"
CREATING CHARACTERS: Developing and exercising your physical imagination in a way that links vocal expression with physical expression

2) To Breakdown the group into smaller companies and to begin creating. Each group will, through discussion, pick a few starting points from which to begin. Each group will focus on exploring a different way into an idea.
This will include but are not limited to:
CREATING INDIVIDUAL COMPOSITIONS: How to begin with a single piece of source material (prop, song, image, etc.), and translate it to physical, theatrical terms.
WRITING INDIVIDUALLY: (to begin with): How to begin writing even if you don't consider yourself a playwright, and how to take abstract ideas garnered from group discussion and translate them into dynamic language for the stage
CHARACTER BASED IMPROVISATION: How to discover and build a character and relationships through improvisation. The emphasis is not on comedy but on delicate emotional and physical commitment to the other human beings onstage with you.

3) To Discuss both as a larger and smaller group how to move forward through group discussion.
PROVIDING CRITICAL FEEDBACK and STEALING/ADDING TO MATERIAL PUT FORTH BY COLLABORATORS.
GENERATING FURTHER MATERIAL AND ASSIGNMENTS BASED ON THE WORK: Helping students to look at and begin to shape the kernels of compelling ideas and questions that have arisen, to ultimately create work that is deeply layered
